Reusable steel cups are everywhere now, which is good for the planet and your wallet. But it is fair to ask what you are actually drinking from. The short version: quality stainless steel is one of the safest materials you can put a drink in. The details are worth knowing, especially since not all "steel" is equal.
The short answer
Yes. Food-grade stainless steel is stable, non-toxic, and does not leach chemicals into your drink under normal use. It is the same family of metal used in professional kitchens and medical tools. The thing that matters is the grade, and that is where you should pay attention.

What "304 stainless steel" actually means
304 (also written 18/8) is the food-grade standard for drinkware. The numbers refer to the mix of chromium and nickel that makes the steel both corrosion-resistant and safe for food contact. It will not rust in normal use, it does not react with most drinks, and it holds up for years. When a cup does not state its grade, that silence is usually the answer. Every steel piece we make is food-grade 304, including the Venice Mirror Cup.
Lead-free and BPA-free, explained
Lead. Quality stainless steel contains no lead, so there is nothing to leach from the surface your drink touches. An old concern about some sealed cups involved a dot of sealing material on the outside base, never the inside, and reputable makers have long moved past it.
BPA. BPA is found in certain plastics, not in steel. A stainless cup has no plastic lining against your drink, so there is no BPA in contact with what you sip. If a cup has a plastic lid, choose one labeled BPA-free, which ours are.

Is double-walled steel safe for hot drinks?
Yes. The insulation is simply a sealed pocket of air between two steel walls, with nothing added to your drink. It keeps coffee hot and the outside cool to hold. The only real rule with double-walled steel is to keep it out of the microwave, since metal and microwaves do not mix.

What to look for before you buy
- Stated grade. Look for 304 or 18/8 food-grade steel. If it is not stated, be cautious.
- Interior finish. The inside should be bare steel, not a painted or coated lining.
- BPA-free lid. If there is a plastic lid or seal, check it is labeled BPA-free.
- Reputable maker. A brand that is transparent about materials is telling you something.

If you would rather not vet every spec yourself, our entire stainless steel collection is food-grade 304, lead-free and BPA-free as standard. For everyday pieces across steel, ceramic and glass, see The Essentials.
Frequently asked questions
Is 304 stainless steel safe to drink from?
Yes. 304 (18/8) is the food-grade standard, stable and non-reactive, and it is widely used for drinkware and kitchen equipment.
Do stainless steel cups contain BPA?
The steel itself never does, since BPA is a plastic additive. Just check that any plastic lid or seal is labeled BPA-free.
Can stainless steel leach into your drink?
Under normal use, quality food-grade steel does not leach. Very acidic liquids left for long periods are best avoided in any cup, but everyday coffee, tea and water are no issue.
Are stainless steel cups safe for hot coffee?
Yes, including double-walled cups, which keep coffee hot while staying cool to hold. Just never microwave them.
How do I know if a steel cup is good quality?
Look for a stated 304 or 18/8 grade, a bare-steel interior, and a maker that is open about materials.
